About VirtueUK
VirtueUK are a UK-based Managed Service Provider delivering service to clients in the greater London area. Founder's Message
I began working in IT sales in 2006. It didn’t take long for me to see why my profession was not regarded highly. IT sales was (and continues to be) notorious for unethical sales practices.
Over time, I found that operating dishonestly and against the interest of your customers for profit was expected. More surprising, however, was that it was accepted.
Customers expected the “typical” salesperson and with just cause. You were either very new to the industry or incredibly lucky if you hadn’t experienced some of the less than savory sales tactics or poor practices first-hand. Everyone, it seemed, had a story about a time when:
- the benefits of a technology were exaggerated and the significant limitations conveniently omitted;
- deal urgency was fabricated through arbitrary discount deadlines;
- they had been subjected to hidden and/or outrageously inflated margins on engagements; or
- significant operational delivery challenges had been created through poorly set expectations and inadequately defined scopes.
Despite my choice of profession, I actually value honesty! I value it in both my personal and professional life and place great emphasis on building and maintaining relationships. Being in IT sales meant, of course, that I was constantly battling the expectations and distrust of new clients before being able to demonstrate my trustworthiness and reliability. I enjoyed being able to surprise my customers and set myself apart in this way. Unfortunately, I grew dejected over time.
After ten years, I had grown unbearably frustrated by the limited space for corporate and personal integrity in the industry. In 2016, I had reached my tipping point and knew something had to change.
My options were clear:
- Compromise my fundamental values and ethics to advance and succeed, or
- Create the space for integrity as a service provider by providing an alternative way of operating. Operating with Virtue.
